In Semester One, 2014, I completed my final elective. The elective I chose to enroll in was EDMA201: Numeracy in the Early Years. As part of this unit, every Wednesday afternoon, we attended a maths club at Phoenix Primary School Redan. The maths club was attended by students from Grade One to Grade Five. Each week, I worked with a small group of children to complete maths activities and games, that would develop each child's mathematical understanding of number. Another requirement of the unit was to complete a Mathematical Assessment Interview (MAI) on a child and develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for that student. During this unit, we also explored an area of Mathematics and explained the common misconceptions students have when learning this particular topic. In a small group, we then designed a game that would help students at home with some of these misconceptions about the topic. We then designed a brochure on the game for parents and ran a parent information session. On 30th April, 2014, we were able to complete our parent information session with parents from the maths clubs. Through this unit I have being able to develop skills such as talking to parents, creating an ILP and assessing a student using the MAI which are activities that will be required of a classroom teacher but however are not often experienced on teaching placements. Below I have included some artifacts that show my involvement in the unit.
